One of the most striking images shows the Moon's south pole, a region that has never been explored by humans. The image reveals a heavily cratered landscape, with mountains and valleys stretching as far as the eye can see. The south pole is also home to a number of permanently shadowed craters, which may contain water ice. Other images show the Moon's maria, or dark plains.
